Phoenix, Durban – 22 August 2026

In a powerful display of youth partnership and community service, Public Relations students from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially requested to partner with the Mayibuyi Youth Organisation to gain practical working experience outside the classroom.

The students were warmly welcomed by Mr. Siviwe Benya, Chairperson of Mayibuyi Youth Organisation, who led them into the community of Phoenix to conduct voluntary work that would address a real social challenge.

A Dirty Spot Affecting Learners and Worshippers

During a community walk, a highly concerning area was identified at the corner of Longcroft Primary School, The Community Church of Worshipers, and Weycroft Drive. The area was very dirty, with litter and illegal dumping affecting learners going to school and congregants visiting the church.

The spot was identified as a priority to be cleaned.

Teamwork in Action

DUT Public Relations students showed their commitment, desire and teamwork in addressing the social challenge. Working closely with other community sectors under the guidance of Mayibuyi Youth Organisation, the students rolled up their sleeves and took part in a full cleaning campaign.

The cleaning campaign was a great success. The corner was cleared, bags of waste were collected, and the area was restored to a clean and dignified state for learners and church-goers.

Chairperson Excited by Youth Partnership

Mr. Siviwe Benya, Chairperson of Mayibuyi Youth Organisation and Coordinator of the cleaning campaign, was so excited to have worked and partnered with young people from Durban University of Technology.

Speaking after the campaign, Mr. Benya said:

“We are very proud of these DUT Public Relations students. They did not just want to learn Public Relations in theory – they requested to learn by serving the community. Their commitment and teamwork in Phoenix shows that young people can solve social problems when we work together. This is what true community development looks like. We are excited about this partnership.”

He added that the partnership has shown that when institutions like DUT collaborate with community-based organisations like Mayibuyi, real change happens on the ground.

More Than a Clean-Up

For the DUT students, the initiative provided practical learning in community engagement, stakeholder relations, event coordination, and social responsibility – core pillars of Public Relations.

For Mayibuyi Youth Organisation, it reaffirmed its role as a bridge between higher education institutions and township communities in need of service.

Mayibuyi Youth Organisation extends its sincere gratitude to the DUT Public Relations students and the Department of Public Relations at DUT for choosing to partner with a community-based organisation. Thank you DUT.
